The Language of Abstraction

Fen Ditton Gallery, Cambridge

A major new print show, celebrating some of the most significant artistic collaborations of Cambridge master printmaker Kip Gresham. ‘The Language of Abstraction’ brings together works by important modern and contemporary painters and sculptors, selected in conversation with Gresham, as a way of highlighting the rich conceptual and visual language of abstract art – a language of colour, form and light - and the potential of the print medium (above all the medium of screenprint) to deepen understanding of this language.

Open Fridays - Sundays, 10am - 5pm
Wednesdays by appointment only

Ai Weiwei: The Liberty of the Doubt
12th February - 19th June 2022
Kettle’s Yard, Cambridge

A new solo exhibition by internationally renowned Chinese artist Ai Weiwei (b. 1957, Beijing) will open in February 2022 at Kettle’s Yard. The exhibition will explore notions of truth, authenticity and value, as well as globalisation, the coronavirus pandemic and the current geopolitical crisis. Ai Weiwei will reflect upon the liberty in the West, in contrast to China and other authoritarian regimes, to question truth and authority, express doubt and seek transparency in political matters. However, in relation to art appreciation, the Chinese have a long tradition of a more fluid and less fixed view in relation to authenticity than is the case in the West, often valuing the act of copying.

Surrealism Beyond Borders
24th February - 29th August 2022
Tate Modern, London

“This landmark exhibition will rewrite the history of the revolutionary art movement”

Surrealism is not a style – but a state of mind. It aims to subvert reality. To find the uncanny in the everyday. To tap into our unconscious desires and bring dreams to life. And for many artists around the world, it has been a way to challenge authority and imagine a new world.

Previous stories of surrealism have focused on Paris in the 1920s. Based on extensive research, this exhibition will reach across the world and over 50 years. It will show how artists around the world have been inspired and united by surrealism – from centres as diverse as Buenos Aires, Cairo, Lisbon, Mexico City, Prague, Seoul, and Tokyo.
