Questions to ask a gallerist

When entering into art collecting, it can be intimidating to pluck up the courage to ask questions about a work of art. But gallerists and art dealers are there to help, they love what they are selling and they love talking about it too! So don’t be afraid to ask… Here are a few starter questions to get you going:

  1. Can you tell me about the artist?

The gallerist should be able to give you more information about the artist and their background. How did they come to be an artist, where did they study?

  2. What inspired the artist?

This relates to the first question but will delve deeper into what drives the artist - why have they chosen that subject or project? Was there something in their life that has inspired that? This is often when you get some interesting stories about the artists and how the works came to be.

  3. How was the work created?

Firstly what type of art is it; a print, drawing or photograph? What materials have been used and what is the process? An original print could be made using a number of different mediums (screenprint, etching, linocut etc.) so take time to understand - you’ll want to be able to tell admirers when they see it in your own collection too!

  4. Where would you hang this piece and how?

Some works require consideration on how and where to hang it. For example, in direct sunlight some works may fade, or if it’s a dark room, how could you light it? Of course, this also includes tips about framing too. The gallerist or art dealer may have a framing service as part of their offering too.

  5. Can I pay in instalments?

If you have fallen in love with a work of art but it’s a little out of your budget right now, it’s worth asking about whether you can pay in instalments. It might not be available for all works, but there’s no harm in asking the question!
